How to Avoid Used Car Export Scams: A Buyer’s Safety Checklist

Buying a vehicle from another country requires trust. Most exporters in Japan run honest businesses, but used car export scams do exist — usually fake sellers offering unbelievably cheap cars. Use this checklist to protect yourself.

1. Be suspicious of prices that are too good to be true

If a car is far cheaper than similar vehicles at auction, ask why. Scammers often use stolen photos at unrealistic prices.

2. Verify the company

Look for a real business address, phone number and email. Call the landline, message on WhatsApp and check that the details match across the website and documents. Ours are listed on our contact page.

3. Ask for the auction sheet and real photos

A genuine exporter can provide the original auction sheet, extra photos and the chassis number on request. Refuse to proceed if they cannot.

4. Check the chassis number

Make sure the chassis (VIN) number on the invoice, the auction sheet and the export certificate all match.

5. Use a proforma invoice

Never pay without an official proforma invoice showing the vehicle details, price term (FOB, CNF or CIF) and company name.

6. Pay only to company accounts

Pay by bank wire transfer to an account that matches the company name on the invoice. Avoid payments to personal accounts, gift cards, or cash transfer services.

7. Confirm bank details by phone

Email hacking can lead to fake bank details. Always call or message your exporter to confirm the account before sending money.

8. Understand the shipping documents

You should receive an Export Certificate, Bill of Lading (B/L), Commercial Invoice and, where required, an Inspection Certificate. We list all of them on our export process page. Ask for the vessel name and tracking number as soon as your car is loaded.

9. Read reviews and ask for references

Search for the company name together with words like “reviews” or “complaints”, and ask for references from customers in your country. For general consumer tips on online purchases, see the FTC’s consumer advice website.

Our commitment

Red flags at a glance

  • The seller refuses phone or video calls.
  • Pressure to pay immediately to “reserve” the car.
  • Requests to pay a personal account or an unrelated company.
  • No auction sheet, no chassis number and stolen-looking photos.
  • Prices far below the market.

What to do if you suspect a scam

Stop all payments, keep copies of emails and chats, report the seller to your bank and local consumer authority, and warn others. If you want a second opinion on an offer, send us the details.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to pay by bank transfer?

Bank transfers to a verified company account that matches the invoice are the standard method. Always confirm the details by phone first.
